The drive from Milwaukee to Madison was an easy drive. Madison is called Mad Town by some of the locals, I guess it’s easier to say or there is a hidden meaning…? Madison is a large city of nearly a quarter of a million. It is the state capitol of Wisconsin and home to the Wisconsin Badgers, University of Wisconsin. The university and the capitol is about a mile apart connected by a pedestrian-only street. State Street is lined with restaurants and taverns. Today is the first home football game of the season and State Street is booming this early morning with red Wisconsin shirts. Young and old! It’s surprising to us see so many fans enjoying the taverns before lunch.
It’s the first week in September and fall is in the air. The mornings bring cool air that requires a little heat. Farms are harvesting and tree leaves are starting to have color. I think we have worn out our welcome this far north. It’s getting time to start heading south.
The capitol is located at the hub of a wagon wheel array of streets. Around the capitol is a square. The square hosts a big farmer’s market on Saturday and indeed is amazing. It is well attended so it quite some time to make our way around it through the crowds. We picked up a few things and enjoyed the people watching as well as visiting the various vendors at the market.
After spending some time exploring the market, we strolled over to the capitol building. Happily the capitol building was recently renovated and restored to its original appearance. There are lots of decorative stencils and murals that were repaired or recreated. Many of the interior columns have gold leaf at their apexes and there is a lot of various stone work throughout the structure.
If you are near Abaline, KS, a must visit is the Eisenhower Presidential Museum and Library. Safe travels. Vince St. Angelo
