Oatman to Seligman Az
It is hard to believe that this stretch of road was the main road between LA and Chicago. The road is a classic narrow road with a hundred blind turns. But today, there is just a small stretch that still exist. I-40 replaced the two lane highway many years ago but about a 100 miles still exist between Oatman to Seligman. . This is one of the best desert drives we have taken. There are signs posted telling drivers that vehicle lengths are limited to 40 feet. And it’s for good reason! Some of the turns are posted at 10 mph which is almost too fast because you can see where vehicles have bottomed out as they turn and climb or descend. There are no guardrails to mess up the view or scenery! We also saw some old cars down some of the embankments.
Oatman was the most interesting stop. The old mining town is now known as a ghost town. The gold mines dried up and I-40 took a more southernly route leaving not much for the town to survive on for many years. Now it is a destination with an awesome drive to get there. When the miners left the area, they left their burrows. Now the wild burrows freely roam around the town and desert. It was imaginary when you think of what it would’ve been like when Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon in Oatman in 1939. It’s a part of historic route 66.
